Abstract

Jan Parandowski (1895-1978) was very prominent Polish novelist, essayist and translator. He is best known for his works relating to classical Greco-Roman culture (he translated Homer's Odyssee into prose). He wrote several popular books: for instance Mitologia (Mythology). However Król życia (The King of Life), Alchemia słowa (The Word Alchemy), Petrarka (Petrarca), Podróże literackie (The Literary Travels) and other books indicate that the essay became a particulary fitting form for him.
