Abstract

The author presents his personal view of sociology formulated in ten theses. The current main threats to sociology are found on the one hand in the anti-scientific claims of postmodernism denying the possibility of social scientific regularities and mechanisms, and on the other hand in the leftist activism turning sociology into ideological and political discourse. Sociology is described as a discipline at the crossroads of science sensu stricto, humanities and art. This status is reflected in the subject matter pervaded with meanings, the need for qualitative methods, theoretical pluralism, the varied audiences targeted, direct practical relevance and the unavoidable value judgments.
